The Intermodal Market Now and in 2025 - InTek Podcast Episode 50

Written by Kevin Baxter | Nov 25, 2024

Fifty episodes in to InTek Freight & Logistics: The Podcast, a returning guest brings his intermodal expertise to help check in on the state of the market. Known as the "Intermodalist," Larry Gross is the President and Founder of Gross Transportation Consulting, this year's IANA Silver Kingpin Award Winner, and a returning guest - check out episode five for more on his background.

For this edition, Larry tells us what the numbers are saying about the intermodal market as the year winds down, how port (and import) related intermodal activity is outpacing domestic intermodal, how the mode is doing versus truckload, and how intermodal is doing compared to its norms. Plus, we look ahead to 2025 and the factors that could affect intermodal - and the economy in general - moving forward, like President-Elect Trump's proposed tariff policies, a once-again impending East Coast port strike, continued Red Sea/Suez Canal unrest, and potential "black swan" events to be determined.

We also spend time south of the border to discuss intermodal in Mexico, as well as for cross-border freight. Larry tells us that while the numbers are not showing tremendous growth for cross-border intermodal, the way the market is behaving suggests otherwise. He does note that intermodal within the country is growing at a very strong rate.
