Intermodal Spot Rate Pricing Trendline Analysis - March 5 2019

The InTek intermodal spot rate index decreased 4.5% over prior week. 

For the week of March 5, 2019, domestic intermodal spot rate index:

  • Down 4.5% from prior week.
  • Down 21.7% from 90 days ago.
  • Down 9.9% from prior year.

Lane Stats: 55.7% increased, 38.3% decreased and 6.0% went unchanged.   

While a greater number of lanes increased this week, they would be classified more as rounding type increases while the lanes that took decreases were significant with 10% plus declines.

Intermodal Volume

Intermodal volumes have weakened recently and are now down 0.7% on a calendar YTD year-over-year basis.  Volume has been negative on a YTD basis 5 of the last 6 weeks.

Comparison of Truckload to Intermodal Spot Rate 

The national truckload spot rate, as reported by DAT, decreased $0.01 a mile or 0.5% from the prior week.  DAT reported the national truckload spot rate was $1.88 a mile.   Truckload spot rates are down 11.3% from prior year.   

The relative percentage decrease between truckload and intermodal spot rates tightened this week, with the decrease in the all-in rate truckload rate per spot market reported to be down 11.3%.  The intermodal national average per mile is down 9.9%.  

Diesel Fuel Comments: 

diesel fuel priceThe EIA reported average diesel fuel price of $3.076 per gallon this week, which is up $0.028 from the prior week.

The diesel price per gallon is up $0.084 or 2.8% higher from the same period last year.

WTI and Brent crude relatively flat from the prior week, with WTI and Brent closing $56.28 and $65.64, respectively.   

Oil prices continue to be a big question mark for many logistics professionals in 2019.

The EIA's most current diesel price projection for diesel is a $2.94 per gallon price for 2019.  

The February EIA price per barrel projections for 2019 inched up this month with the new thinking being the average WTI and Brent prices per barrel for 2019 to be $54.79 and $61.03, respectively.
