International Container Ports...in the Midwest? - Podcast Episode 44

Written by Kevin Baxter | Sep 5, 2024

Indiana is on track to host an international ocean container port, despite the minor detail of being virtually landlocked. On Episode 44 of InTek Freight & Logistics: The Podcast, Ports of Indiana CEO Jody Peacock joins us to discuss the Indiana Container Initiative, and how in just a couple of years, container ships should be making their way between Europe and Burns Harbor on Lake Michigan.

He explains the route ships already take through the St. Lawrence and the Great Lakes and the lock system that makes it all possible. And he tells us why supporting container trade will enhance Indiana's agricultural industry while also opening up other types of valuable cargo.

Jody explains what the Ports of Indiana (also located at Jeffersonville and Mount Vernon along the Ohio River) already handle, where they trade with both domestically and internationally, and the importance of Indiana steel. He also discusses Indiana's unique access to all freight modes, with ocean cargo joined by intermodal, truck, air and even barge - which he cites as especially environmentally friendly.

On the environmental note, Jody explains how one Indiana port is looking at an alternative to vehicles altogether instead of just switching to EVs, and he explains how the Ports of Indiana team is being proactive in creating projects and partnerships to continue to move the ports themselves, and supply chains, forward.
