Any heat for freight this summer? - Podcast Episode 38

June 25, 2024 Kevin Baxter

Podcast Episode 38

It is unequivocally, unquestionably hot in many parts of the U.S. this summer, but is the freight market following thermometers up? To find out what the numbers say, we welcome Dr. Jason Miller, tenured professor of logistics at Michigan State University's Eli Broad College of Business as our guest on the latest edition of InTek Freight & Logistics: The Podcast.

In addition to teaching, Dr. Miller is a noted freight expert who distills data from across the spectrum to take the market's temperature, something he helps us with as we go over indicators like manufacturing, the Federal Reserve, housing and trucking industry numbers to name a few. In just about every case, he shares that those figures paint a continued definitively not-hot picture for the market at the midway point of 2024. He also tells us when to expect signs of life (the answer may not be soon enough for many).

We discuss retail inventory, and why restocking is not a direct response to destocking following the over-ordering that occurred a couple years ago. We also touch on the Red Sea crisis, it's impact on global freight and whether that impact will hit domestic shipping. And we shift gears to get his thoughts on AI and machine learning and their potential impacts on supply chain management moving forward.

You can find Dr. Miller's thoughts on the market - and the various numbers that shape them - on a regular basis by following him on LinkedIn.
