EPA renews InTek's SmartWay Certification

August 20, 2024 Kevin Baxter

InTek SmartWay 2024

InTek Freight & Logistics, Inc. has announced the renewal of its status as EPA SmartWay certified. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) this week approved InTek's annual renewal, which maintains InTek's status as a SmartWay Partner for into 2025. InTek submitted the required environmental responsibility data for a third-party logistics provider (3PL) to the EPA, which validated its continued ongoing SmartWay certification - a status InTek has enjoyed for 15 years.

"Our certification renewal as an EPA SmartWay certified partner shows how InTek continues to make sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of freight a top priority," said Rick LaGore, InTek CEO. "We are proud to continue our long-standing status as one of the nearly 4,000 SmartWay partners who demonstrate both strong environmental leadership and corporate responsibility."

What Is EPA SmartWay Certified?

To be EPA SmartWay Certified is to be recognized as an environmentally responsible member of the freight and logistics space. The SmartWay Transport Partnership is designed to help companies improve supply chain sustainability by measuring, benchmarking, and improving the efficiency of freight transportation. Formed 20 years ago as a joint effort between the EPA, the American Trucking Associations (ATA) and Business for Social Responsibility along with other industry stakeholders and environmental groups, the partnership has saved

  • 379 million barrels of oil
  • 162 million metric tons of CO2
  • 2.8 million short tons of Nitrogen oxides (NOx)
  • 114,000 short tons of particulate matter (PM)
  • $52 billion in fuel costs

All this adds up to the equivalent of the annual electricity usage of 24 million homes.

Companies involved in moving freight in some way can gain SmartWay certification voluntarily by committing to reduce their environmental footprint, and measurably doing so. Shippers, logistics companies and truck, rail, barge and multimodal carriers can join the partner ranks, while those companies not directly involved in freight can still become affiliates to show their environmental commitment.
