Intermodal Spot Rate Pricing Trendline Analysis - March 26 2019

Weekly discussion and analysis on the trends in the intermodal spot rate market.

intermodal spot ratesThe InTek intermodal spot rate index decreased 2.1% over prior week. 

For the week of March 26, 2019, domestic intermodal spot rate index:

  • Down 2.1% from prior week.
  • Down 20.7% from 90 days ago.
  • Down 13.8% from prior year.

Lane Stats: 5.2% increased, 22.6% decreased and 72.2% went unchanged.   

Outbound Chicago outbound continued their decreases this week, with the average decline of 4.5%, while outbound SoCal and NorCal also took on some decreases from the prior week.   Other than these three markets, the landscape was essentially flat from the prior week.

Intermodal Volume

Intermodal volumes continue to show weakness. 

Volumes are down 0.9% on a calendar YTD year-over-year basis with trailers (TOFC) down 4.0% and containers (COFC) down 0.7%.  In terms of domestic regions, USA is down 0.6%, Canada down 0.3% and Mexico is down 8.5%.

Comparison of Truckload to Intermodal Spot Rate 

The national truckload spot rate held relatively flat to last week, as reported by the DAT Trendline Report.  

Year-over-year truckload national average truckload spot rates per mile are down 11.3%, while domestic intermodal is down a little over 12% per mile. 

Keep in mind when using this metric to apply it as directional data tool, not an absolute.   

Diesel Fuel Comments: 

diesel fuel priceThe EIA reported average diesel fuel price of $3.080 per gallon this week, which is up $0.010 or 0.3% from the prior week.

The diesel price per gallon is up $0.070 or 2.3% higher from the same period last year.

WTI and Brent crude price per barrel is relatively flat this week versus last, with WTI and Brent closing at $60.05 and $68.09, respectively.   

Oil prices continue to be a big question for many logistics professionals in 2019, with OPEC holding strong to each other on production cuts and world economic slowdown concerns.

The EIA's March 2019 diesel price average price projection for diesel is $3.01 per gallon for calendar year.

In the same report, EIA's average price per barrel oil projections for 2019 are:

  • WTI $56.13
  • Brent $62.78
